Through the Family Sponsorship Program, you may be sponsored for a Canada PR Visa if you have family residing in Canada. “Family Reunification’ is regarded as one of the cornerstones of Canadian immigration.

What is Family Sponsorship Program?

Your relatives can live, work, and study in Canada as Permanent Residents. You can sponsor them if:

  • Canadian Permanent Resident
  • Canadian Citizen
  • A person registered in Canada under the Indian Canadian Act

How CFSP works

If you are a Canadian Citizen or Canadian PR or A person registered under the Indian Canadian Act with 18+ Age, then you can sponsor certain family members of your family to become Permanent Residents of Canada. If your family members become permanent residents of Canada then they can live, work, and study in the maple country. If you are sponsoring your family member to come and live in Canada as a PR, then you are the only one who is responsible for their financial needs.

Benefits of Family Sponsorship Program

The benefits of FSP are the following:

  • Family members who are sponsored under this category are not required to clear any cut-off test like in Express Entry.
  • A sponsored person has the right to live, study and work in the country
  • Will get Government-Funded healthcare, free education till 18 years, Pension Plan Benefits, Old age security, and guaranteed income supplements
  • Parents living in Canada on a dependent visa as a PR can apply for the Canadian Citizen after 3 years

Other Canada immigration schemes, such as the Express Entry program, Provincial Nominee Program, etc., give a road to a Canada PR Visa. IRCC awards ITAs to applicants for express admission via regular express entry lotteries.

What are the criteria for becoming a Sponsor?

For a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to qualify as a sponsor, they must:

  • Sign a sponsorship agreement with the parent to be sponsored that obligates the sponsor to offer financial help, if required. This agreement also stipulates that a permanent resident will do everything possible to support himself;
  • Provide financial support to a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for three years from the date they become a permanent resident;
  • And provide financial support to a dependent child for 10 years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first.

Eligibility for Family Sponsorship Program

Family members who you can sponsor are:

  • Spouse or Common-Law-Partner, Wife (With some restrictions)
  • Dependent Children
  • Parents and Grandparents
  • Brothers, Sisters, or any other close relatives (Aunt or Uncle)
  • Another parent of any age or relationship but only in special condition
  • Accompanying parents or the above-mentioned persons

Sponsorship Agreement

The sponsor must promise to financially help the family member if the latter cannot provide for himself. This is to assure that the new permanent resident will not need government aid. This contract is known as a Sponsorship Agreement. The length of this commitment depends on the sponsored individual:

  • Spouse or Common-law-partner and wife – 3 years
  • Dependent Children – 10 years or when the child age gets 22 years old (whichever comes first) 3 years for a dependent child over the age of 22 years
